David Murphy praised in Sukanya premiere reviews

David Murphy and Ravi Shankar’s final opera Sukanya were highly praised in reviews of the World Premiere tour across the UK, culminating in a performance at London’s Royal Festival Hall as part of the Southbank Centre’s Alchemy Festival.

‘A delightful evening of pure escapism’ Ivan Hewitt, The Telegraph, 13 May 2017

★★★★☆ ‘The mix of microtonal, improvised Indian music…with the massed standard-notated ranks of the London Philharmonic Orchestra makes for a sound world of arresting beauty and originality.’ Mark Valencia, What’s On Stage, 13 May 2017

★★★★☆ ‘The whole thing moves with considerable verve, with energetic dance sequences and some truly astonishing beatboxing from the chorus … An audience that looked more than usually diverse… responded warmly.’ Richard Bratby, Birmingham Post, 16 May 2017

★★★★☆ ‘A delightful fusion of Eastern and Western traditions … The London Philharmonic Orchestra were faultless … something new and vibrant for the opera scene’ Robert Gainer, bachtrack.com, 17 May 2017

‘Credit must go to David Murphy as well as Ravi Shankar. Someone who prepared Mozart under Mackerras is going to be very experienced in balancing the voices – instrumental as well as vocal – in opera, and that experience certainly shows.’ Bob Shingleton – On an Overgrown Path
